Saver.Global Launches Free Cybersecurity Course in Fiji to Combat Rising ScamThreats
July 30, 2025
Saver.Global is proud to announce the launch of its latest free mobile course, Safe Surfing, now available on the SaverLearning platform. The course equips Fijians with the tools to stay safe online, teaching users how to identify scams, respond to threats, and protect their privacy in an increasingly digital world.
The course was officially launched at a webinar held on June 6th, 2025, in partnership with Vodafone Fiji and the Consumer Council of Fiji. The event brought together leaders from the telecommunications, consumer protection, and digital education sectors to address the urgent rise in scams across the country.
“We’re proud to launch our latest course, Safe Surfing, which covers five key cybersecurity topics in a clear, engaging, and practical way,” said Jon Capal, CEO of Saver.Global. “Digital safety isn’t just a tech issue, it’s a life skill. As more Fijians use mobile money and online services, we want to make sure they have access to free, high-quality tools to protect themselves and their families.”
Designed for Everyday Fijians Safe Surfing is a 5-unit course developed specifically for mobile users, covering:
- How to spot scams, fraud, and phishing
- What to do if you’ve been targeted
- How to protect your personal information
- Why online privacy matters
- Simple steps to stay safe every day
The course is available on the SaverLearning app, which is free to download and use. Like all SaverLearning content, it is designed to be practical and accessible for users of all literacy levels. According to the Consumer Council of Fiji, over 1,490 complaints related to scams have been lodged since 2022, totalling more than FJD $2.3 million in losses. “Scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated, preying on Fijians through digital platforms,” said Seema Shandil, Chief Executive Officer of the Consumer Council of Fiji. “We are committed to empowering consumers with the knowledge and tools to identify, avoid, and report scams. Through advocacy and collaboration with partners like Saver.Global, we are building a safer digital environment for all.”
During the webinar, Shailendra Prasad, General Manager – Digital Financial Services at
Vodafone Fiji, highlighted the importance of making users more aware of cybersafe practices. Malicious and bad actors are constantly coming up with highly sophisticated and previously unheard-of fraudulent schemes and scams to lure the public into revealing their personal information or clicking onto compromised links that allows scammers to access sensitive personal information.
Presenters discussed emerging threats including phishing, fake mobile apps, social media scams, and Ponzi schemes and increasingly the threat posed by AI. The simple rule is if its too good to be true it most likely is. In such cases where you are being hurried into making a payment or providing your sensitive financial account information, take a pause and verify the information before you act or part with your hard-earned money.
Safe Surfing is the second in Saver.Global’s cybersecurity course series, building on the
success of its first course on digital fraud. The platform also offers free courses on:
- Budgeting
- Remittances
- Everyday banking; with more financial and digital topics coming soon.
Fijians are encouraged to download the SaverLearning app and start the Safe Surfing course today, available anytime, anywhere, at no cost. Enquiries and partnership interest please reach out to Jon Capal via jon.capal@saver.global or the Consumer Council of Fiji Helpline 155.
