Council applauds decision by Commerce Commission

The Consumer Council applauds the sound decision made by the Commerce Commission to regulate termination calls between telecommunication companies here in Fiji.

For far too long consumers have had to bear the high cost of wholesale mobile termination prices  and the council firmly believes that order on “Control of Prices of Interconnection Services Rates” will bring down retail charges which will benefit consumers. The new order will control charges incurred by customers during inter-network calls.

The Council thanks the Commission as this is a positive way of addressing consumer concerns over termination charges by a single mobile termination rate and fixed termination rate. This surely creates a standard platform for competition.

It should be noted that one the objectives of government’s telecommunication policy is to have robust interconnectivity. Today’s decision will assist consumers to make inter-network calls freely.
