Fiji wide workshops for NCDs begins

A nationwide awareness on combating Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) will begin in Suva tomorrow.

The Alliance for Healthy Living is organizing workshops on the theme "Combating NCDs in Fiji through consumer Empowerment" in the central, western and northern divisions.

The aim of the workshops are to empower consumers with knowledge and skills that will assist them to make healthy food choices and enable them to successfully influence policies to combat NCDs.

The Alliance for Healthy Living comprises of Consumer Council of Fiji, Ministry of Health and Medical Services and Diabetes Fiji.

The first workshop will be held at the Attorney-General’s Conference Room in Suva tomorrow followed by Lautoka on Thursday 5 October, 2017 and the workshop concludes in Labasa on Monday 16 October, 2017.

Topic of discussions will include NCDs from a regional perspective, the trend in NCDs in Fiji, NCD costing, registration of diabetic patients in hospitals, chaser habits during kava consumptions and the success with Sugar Sweetened Beverages (SSBtaxes. The recently launched My Kana App will also be introduced to the participants by the National Food and Nutrition Centre. Presenters will be from Ministry of Health & Medical Services, World Health Organisation (WHO), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Consumer Council of Fiji.

It is considered that the participation of the grass-roots organisations representing people living with NCDs could assist in changing consumer behavior and in formulating public health policies that would assist in management and prevention of NCDs.

 Participants will also have an opportunity to have their say on what policy change they would like to see in the next budget announcement to address NCD.

The workshop will be attended by the Non-Government Organizations, health stakeholders, community workers, faith-based organizations, women’s groups, youth groups and civil servants.
